Musical “Jolly Holiday” as Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix Open D23 Expo 2011

It’s a Musical “Jolly Holiday” as Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix
Bring Harmony and Melodic Fun to First Night of Disney’s D23 Expo, August 19-21, 2011

Disney fans attending the first day of Disney’s D23 Expo, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, will be able to end their day with an unforgettable evening of harmony provided by Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix. The popular vocal quartet is comprised of legendary television, Broadway, and film star Dick Van Dyke and three renowned west coast musicians—Mike Mendyke, Bryan Chadima and Eric Bradley. The group will appear in concert on Stage 23 at the D23 Expo on Friday, August 19, 2011, at 8:15 p.m.

Songs from Van Dyke’s varied entertainment career in addition to many well-known Disney hits and timeless pop standards will be performed by Van Dyke and The Vantastix in a show rich in humor, pure entertainment and sing-along favorites. Much of the show’s song roster is based on Put On A Happy Face, the group’s inaugural a cappella album, which features 14 well-known tunes. The CD will be available for purchase in the D23 Expo Treasure Trove store.

Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix is the result of a chance meeting of Van Dyke and Mendyke at a Malibu coffee shop in September 2000. With the addition of Chadima and Bradley, the group started "just for fun," gathering weekly for pizza and singing around Van Dyke’s piano, and soon built up an impressive repertoire of children's songs and standards.

After their first casual performance during the wrap party for Van Dyke’s long-running mystery TV series Diagnosis Murder, the group began to get requests to appear at charity events and benefits. They have performed at the City of Hope Hospital; the Beverly Hilton for the Society of Singers Concert honoring Dame Julie Andrews; the Hollywood Bowl as part of an evening of TV theme songs; and at the awarding of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Rose Marie, who appeared with Van Dyke on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

There have also been television appearances at the TV Land Awards, Larry King Live, and a performance of the National Anthem for the NBA Playoffs and more. The group continues to perform at benefits in the greater Los Angeles area.

“Hard work and planning are important if one wants to get ahead in life,” Van Dyke says. “More important is leaving one's self open to the twists and turns, the wonderful surprises that life has to offer. If you can't bend with the wind, go with the flow, you're gonna miss some great adventures. These three guys walked into my life from out of nowhere and turned my Golden Years into pure platinum. We always have a great time performing together, and we’re looking forward to appearing at the D23 Expo.”
Dick Van Dyke – Van Dyke began his remarkable career more than 50 years ago in a record-pantomime act called The Merry Mutes. He then went on to host several TV shows before starring on Broadway in Bye Bye Birdie, for which he received a Tony Award®. The classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show came next, then the screen version of Birdie, followed by the classic Disney film musical Mary Poppins, the equally adored movie musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the recent hit Night at the Museum, and a host of other wonderfully entertaining films. Winner of five Emmy Awards®, Van Dyke completed nine seasons of the TV series Diagnosis Murder.

Bryan Chadima – Bryan Chadima is a writer, musical director, arranger, and singer. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Western Michigan University. He has toured nationally and recorded albums with numerous vocal groups and shows including Blind Man's Bluff, Gold Company, Vox Lumiere, and The Three Waiters. His musical directing credits include Klub Kokomo and Baby It's You. Chadima arranges most of the material performed by the Vantastix.

Eric Bradley – Bradley’s road to Los Angeles began in Connecticut where he grew up then at the University of Miami, where he studied music, film, and television, and then to Chicago, where he started his career as a vocalist and voice-over actor. Bradley now enjoys a career as a studio singer in LA. His film and TV credits include The Simpsons Movie, Spiderman 3, Blades of Glory, King Kong, Superman Returns, The Polar Express, Enchanted, I Am Legend, How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy, and the Oscars telecast. He also sings with jazz sensation Sixth Wave, the 2001 National Harmony Sweepstakes Champions.

Mike Mendyke – An MIT graduate and former NASA engineer with degrees in aerospace engineering and music, Mendyke believes every vocal group should include at least one rocket scientist. After eight years in the defense industry, he began recording albums and touring the U.S. and Japan with the vocal group Five O'Clock Shadow. A longtime advocate of vocal music, Mendyke is a past board member and former treasurer for The Contemporary A Cappella Society. Mendyke also runs an online marketing business, as well as music distribution services.

Disney Twenty-Three Magazine Celebrates 40 Years of WDW

Commemorating 40 Years of Walt Disney World

DISNEY TWENTY-THREE MAGAZINE FALL ISSUE HITS STANDS AUGUST 2

Special Issue Includes:
  • The Story of How Walt’s Dream Destination Became a Reality
  • A Rare Glimpse into the Magic Kingdom’s Underground Labyrinth
  • A Peek Back at Early Attractions
  • Plus an Exhilarating Hint of the Park’s Future
The special fall issue of Disney twenty-three magazine, on stands August 2, is dedicated entirely to the 40th anniversary of Walt Disney World.

Readers are offered a look at how the resort was created, including revealing details behind the mysterious operation to acquire the vast expanse of Florida land needed to build Walt’s “vacation kingdom of the world.” With its nostalgic look back at attractions that have vanished but remain in the hearts of multiple generations, this commemorative issue also takes readers on an exclusive visit to the Magic Kingdom’s underground “city.” Readers are privy to a host of little-known facts that contribute to Walt Disney World’s remarkable history and give the Florida theme park its unique identity. An illuminating all-encompassing interview with Imagineering dynamo Eric Jacobson rounds out the issue, as he tours the Magic Kingdom with Disney twenty-three, pointing out some of his park favorites and giving readers a preview of the new, expanded Fantasyland.

In addition to the look back at the excitement leading up to the spectacular opening of the Walt Disney World Resort in October 1971, Disney twenty-three’s fall issue includes an intimate, never-before-told portrait of Walt’s brother Roy, by his grandson Roy P. Disney. Roy O. was the executive responsible for making sure that the park opened on time… and on budget.

And there’s more in the autumn issue of Disney twenty-three:

· WE SAY IT’S DISNEY!: Bob Foster played a key role in the acquisition of the land that would become Walt Disney World. With Bob’s insights and recollections, Disney archivist Steven Vagnini takes us back to the twinkle in Walt’s eye that eventually became a reality.

· REMEMBERING 1971: Disney twenty-three relives the historic events leading up to that unforgettable day in October when Walt Disney World welcomed its first guests.

· MAKIN’ MEMORIES: From The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter to Kitchen Kabaret, the Magic Kingdom and Epcot have been home to countless attractions that left guests with the warm fuzzies. Here are some of Disney twenty-three’s all-time favorites.

· IN A CLASS BY HERSELF: Readers are welcomed aboard Empress Lilly, the Disney Village Marketplace riverboat that served up culinary delights from 1977 to 1995. Readers are even given the exclusive secret recipe for the Chicken Crepes Lilly that became so popular on the floating attraction.

· 40 THINGS (YOU JUST MIGHT NOT KNOW!) ABOUT WALT DISNEY WORLD: Even the most avid Disney fan might be surprised by the trivia uncovered about Walt Disney World in this feature. The parks are filled with vibrant history and little-known gems.

· AND MUCH MORE!

To become a D23 Member, and learn more about membership and the fall issue of Disney twenty-three, visit www.disney.com/D23.

Beginning August 2, Disney twenty-three is available at select retail locations for $15.95.

Emily Osment of "Cyberbully" on "SorCom Review" Tuesday 7/19 - 8am/e!

ORLANDO Florida - Saturday July 16, 2011 - The Sorcerer Radio Network, a global leader in fan-based Disney internet radio and programming, is proud to have actor Emily Osment of the ABC Family Original Movie Cyberbully as guest on the SorCom Review radio show July 19th, 2011. In Cyberbully, Osment plays Taylor Hillridge, a teenage girl who falls victim to online bullying, and the cost it takes on her as well as her friends and family.

Join host Eric Allen for the SorCom Review, Tuesdays at 8 a.m./eastern on Sorcerer Radio - www.SRSounds.com.

*This interview is made in partnership with Sorcerer Radio, Chip and Company and ABC Family.

Official Site: http://abcfamily.go.com/movies/cyberbully/

About Emily Osment:
Emily Osment was born in Los Angeles on March 10th, 1992. She is best known for her role as a regular on the hit Disney Channel show, "Hannah Montana," in which she plays the hyperactive, Lily Truscott, alongside co-stars Miley Cyrus and Mitchell Musso. She is the younger sister of The Sixth Sense star, Haley Joel Osment. Her father is also an actor of some renown. Following in their footsteps, Emily started her acting career performing in several commercials, including a radio spot with Dick Van Dyke, before making her film debut in "The Secret Life of Girls." The same year she landed a role in the Hallmark film, "Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter's End," as the daughter of Glenn Close and Christopher Walken. That role led to a nomination for Best Young Actor.

After that Emily played several smaller roles for television, which include, "3rd Rock from the Sun," "Touched by an Angel," and "Friends." During this time she also did voice acting alongside her brother and John Cleese, Catherine O'Hara, and Harry Shearer in the short animated-film, "Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big."

Finally, Emily landed the much sought after role of Gerti Giggles in, "Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams." Writer/Director Robert Rodriguez was so impressed by her audition that he made the role longer without even knowing that she was the sister of Haley Joel Osment. She then appeared in the sequel, "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over."

About Cyberbully:
Cyberbully follows Taylor Hillridge (Emily Osment), a teenage girl who falls victim to online bullying, and the cost it takes on her as well as her friends and family. Taylor is a pretty seventeen-year-old student dealing with her parents' recent divorce and painfully aware of her lower social status in high school. When her mom gives her a computer for her birthday, Taylor is excited by the prospect of going online to meet new friends without her mother always looking over her shoulder. However, Taylor soon finds herself the victim of betrayal and bullying while visiting a popular social website. Obsessed with the damaging posts, she begins to withdraw from her family and friends, including her life-long best friend, Samantha Caldone (Kay Panabaker). Tormented and afraid to face her peers at school, Taylor is pushed to an extreme breaking point. It is only after this life-changing event that Taylor learns that she is not alone – meeting other teens, including a classmate, who have had similar experiences. Taylor's mom, Kris (Kelly Rowan), reels from the incident and takes on the school system and state legislation to help prevent others from going through the same harrowing ordeal as her daughter.

'Winnie the Pooh' - "Owl's Cold" (video clip)

Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with “Winnie the Pooh.” Featuring the timeless charm, wit and whimsy of the original short films, this all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo—and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail. “Ever have one of those days where you just can’t win, Eeyore?” asks Pooh. Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some honey. Inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style, “Winnie the Pooh” hits theaters in the U.S. on July 15, 2011.

WDW Monorail Shutting Down 1 Hour After Regular Park Hours.

Walt Disney World has decided to cut back on after-hours monorail service during Extra Magic Hours. Starting today, the Epcot monorail ceases operations one hour after regular park closing. The Magic Kingdom monorails cease operations one hour after regular park closing in a few weeks, beginning on Monday, August 1.

It's likely that this change is designed to allow for more downtime for the monorails and their drivers. It was at the end of a late Extra Magic Hours evening at the Magic Kingdom the night of July 3-4, 2009, that a fatal monorail crash occurred, taking the life of monorail pilot Austin Wuennenberg. It's possible that the late hour was a contributing factor in the crash, both in the fatigue of those involved, and in the fact that the monorail supervisor was taking a dinner break away from the monorail station at the time of the accident. It's also possible that this in an attempt to make the monorail resorts a little less attractive, and to shift the demand for resorts to other locations around property.

In addition, with the "Tronorail" being converted back to Monorail Coral, the system is down to 10 trains again until August.

Since Extra Magic Hours are for resort guests only, monorails between the parks and the Transportation and Ticket Center are less necessary because most guests get to the parks via bus. However, for those guests staying at monorail resorts, losing the ability to take the monorail back to their resort and having to take a boat or a bus is much more of a hardship.

What do you think?

Will cutting monorail service during Extra Magic Hours make it less likely that you'll stay at a monorail resort?

A Look at the New MouseGear at Epcot

Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager gives us a look inside the new MouseGear Store at Epcot in his latest Disney Parks Blog Column:

MouseGear 2.0 at Epcot

One aspect of working for Disney that I enjoy is the culture of continuous improvement. You may recall that I love quotes from Walt Disney and I recently found one that summarized his approach to improvements at Disney Parks: “Whenever I go on a ride, I’m always thinking of what’s wrong with the thing and how it can be improved.” A great example of this philosophy in action is now found at MouseGear in Epcot. I recently visited this merchandise location to speak with Mike Myers, Manager for Merchandise Operations at Epcot, about some of the enhancements.

MouseGear 2.0 at Epcot

“When MouseGear opened in 1999, it quickly became a top shopping destination in Epcot,” explained Mike. “Around 18 months ago, we wondered how we could improve on the shopping experience for our guests. [MouseGear] was a good location but we wanted to make it a great location.”

That challenge was met by a team of individuals representing global retail design, operations, planning, product development, facility asset management, sourcing and Walt Disney Imagineering who worked together on this next evolution of MouseGear. Construction started in August 2010 and was completed in phases until this past month.

At first glance you may not notice the improvements, as they are seamless to the experience. For me, I immediately noticed a difference as I worked in MouseGear over 10 years ago. The location felt bigger and Mike confirmed my observation.

“One improvement made was lowering the fixtures that hold merchandise,” continued Mike. “By lowering the fixtures, the location feels more spacious. We also relocated the registers to strategic points throughout the store thus making checkout easier.”

This means the “wall of registers” that I recall from my time at MouseGear is gone! Mike explained that new colorful signage and carpet were also added to the mix.
“Each product area now has a color-coded sign and label that appear on new store directional maps located at each entrance,” said Mike. “We installed new carpeting that creates a pathway to make it easier for guests to explore.”

One final detail that is easy to spot is the cast members’ new costumes. I love the nod to Spaceship Earth on the front of the shirt, and the colors look sharp (they match the colors now used in the location)! Mike explained that one item was added to the costume that may be familiar to many guests.

“During the costume review process, Gina Errico, General Manager of Merchandise at Epcot, suggested a ‘Hidden Mickey’ be added to the costume,” continued Mike. “We loved the idea as ‘Hidden Mickeys’ are found in many locations at Disney Parks. We added a small one to the back of the cast members’ shirts. But don’t tell anyone!”
